Scott Manley is someone who fell into youtube because he felt a deep compelling need to teach people orbital mechanics and rocket science so they could play Kerbal Space Program, now, years later the gaming videos are less important and the pure science is the main thrust. My degrees are all in Physics and Astronomy, so much of the rocket science and engineering I've learned is self taught, always learning, always teaching.

I'm not a professional youtuber, I have a day job in software development which means I won't take lame sponsored content, or tell you to sign up for affiliate services to make a quick buck. However lots of generous people have asked to support my hobby via Patreon and I'm grateful to those individuals.

Also occasionally shares cute videos of his kids.

And for everyone asking about the music at the end of my videos ccmixter.org/files/tigoolio/45377

  • 2021 and I still watch it😂

  • Old Space - same old tricks and can't learn new ones.

  • Dynetic's lander is the best design from the human factors point of view... and this project is all about getting humans from A to B, not stuck at the top of a rocket, unable to reach B because the elevator broke 😒

  • It lands on its tail, the way that God and Robert Heinlein intended.

  • Interesting, thanks!

  • The far side of the Moon: the only spot in the entire observable universe where there's absolutely no chance of ever seeing Earth.

  • Shout out to the girl/guy that wrote "New raptor who dis?" on raptor # 66.

  • Its also good to see Scott Manley being so painfully diplomatic.. Almost tying himself in knots defending Starship as a lunar lander. Scary, but fun :)

  • This smells fishy. Is this a legit program? Or is is means to milk money out of government. As much as I've been all my life space program person and even worked on rockets, I feel space activities are now just dog and pony shows to dazzle new investors to invest. Hence Space X low bit is to snag a contract with little hope to be funded to end but to Space X it is another cash source to build lots of shinny rockets with lots of cameras to entertain the space nerds and get more and more investors. Plus get SEnewssrs more subjects to get their bucks. It's an elaborate entertainment program. Space X to me is Enron but for space.

  • So much paid for renders of things that actually don't exist (and highly unlikely to do so in future). Look at Scrapship - renders exist from late 2012, so many claims has been done, so much prototypes (it is a huge hyperbolizing to call Scrapship a prototype) has been annihilated due to a lithobreaking (just for comparison - in the process of Space Shuttle development 0 (zero) prototypes has been lost) and now what? Another fancy rendering. Great. We have winner, ladies and gentlemen. We have winner - the render studio which performs cheapest CGI clips for SpaceX. Only for $3 bln. As far as I can understand current situation in the entire world - to provide any kind of policy which allows to cut the budget money into well known pockets, no matter what it is - space program, climate change, diversity/equality, ecology, science - whatever - everything is organized this way. And that makes me very sad.

  • A corrosive, volatile, carcinogenic and downright dangerous liquid going through a rocket turbopump and combustion chamber at very high speed and pressure and heat. what could POSSIBLY go wrong?!?!

  • And the corporate space race is already over. ROFL

  • Five legs. Office chairs have five legs for a reason.

  • No one has a problem with the height and mass of Starship? Whatever happened to designing space craft fit for the purpose and not end up with another space shuttle due to budget?

  • and we all been told in school that the united states killed hitler and won germany hmm.................

  • Anyone after selecting space x?

  • "including those who play on console", aww, thx, someone finally remembered those players

  • I have just watched this episode. It was nice and it made me wondering. Have you made an episode about the trajectory of the bullet if it would been shot while space walking in the orbit of the Earth? Is it possible to shot yourself while shotting away from yourself in certain trajectory and bullet making a full circle around the Earth?

  • Seems like a lot of money just to strew the lunar surface with shards of scrap metal and bone.

  • I'm new to this but , Why didnt you use a heat deflector ?

  • Maybe cargo version of starship will carry parts of gateway

  • Maybe if NASA gets enough trust in starship they might cancel the gateway (which I don't want ) and just put a modified starship that can stay basically forever like a space station

  • Elon Musk = 2 Jeff Bezos = -1 I feel bad about Dynetics' shot but Jeff Bezos' plans sucks cuz everything in their rocket schematic is basically a huge waste on resources.

  • spaceX: reusable Dynetics: not usable

  • Space X had loads of Space to expand - Scott Manley 2021

  • When we used to see the satellite downlink signal of one of the ships going up and down we would say "It looks rough out there today"

  • Even NASA gets STONK FOMO.

  • The Answer is “Sea Dragon “

  • I think they chose space X Becoz 1) they can do things lot cheaper 2) starship can every thing that NASA wants to carry to the moon (eventually) like loads of American flags 😂, moon bases, big rovers, heavy machinery for drilling, loads of supplies like food, water, oxygen etc inorder to start the initials to build a permanent presence And maybe even a modified cybertruck 😍😍

  • Space propaganda is like the movie business, You collect billions of tax payer dollars and in return play a film for them.

  • I'm surprised Elon didn't choose a saucer design, that would probably be a lot better for landing on uneven terrain, is more stable, and has the advantage of body lift for atmospheric reentry

  • NASA and SpaceX is stronk together

  • 10 years wtf? 2024 was the date.... We can officially say 60 years since men allegedly walked on moon 40 years away from a century.

  • Elon is taking space to space, it`s big, it`s a Lab/Hotel on the moon. it makes sense, Why waste time & money on the other little ships?

  • when you have $20 to spend and Elon pops up "all this could be yours for $19.99"

  • I feel like Blue Origin thought they’d win easy just because of Amazon and Lockheed lobbying

  • With Elons timelines America will land on the moon only to be greeted by European and Chinese colonists.

  • Hollywood asking for science advice?? I don't recognize the world anymore.

  • Combat unit 2, model E.

  • Why are they using such an over large, overcomplicated solution for shuttling people to and from the lunar surface? Doesnt seem very efficient.

    • I say that the Dynetics vehicle seems to make the most sense, but I cannot imagine how it could be too heavy or too expensive for its size. Also, with the tanks it leaves behind, couldn't the tanks be reused as part of a long term habitat?

  • So, This thing is so MASSIVE not even the NASA Starting towers can hold it. A new one would cost approximately 2 billions alone. And then you include Northrop Grumman AND Lockheed Martin as contractors which are notoriously infamous for cost overruns? Not to mention the failure rate during and after SpaceX' landing attempts? i don't know if that is just another attempt to squeeze as much money out of a "contract" as possible.

  • Would it be possible to send the multiple tankers up and fill a bigger tank, before you even send the crew up and refill the crewvehicle

  • But Starship is not compatible with the SLS and the other designs are. By choosing one of the other designs, NASA could have got to the moon much faster. Starship is its own launch system and it may take many years to complete testing and building it whereas SLS has already been built and tested.

  • Assuming this would launch on a Super Heavy, have the ability to refuel in LEO, carry up astronauts and transfer them to the moon, what is the use of SLS, Gateway and Orion? As far as I can see the only thing this version of Starship cannot do is reenter earth's atmosphere. That would seem a small capability to add if the alternative is lugging along an Orion just for that.

  • Its so long and thin lets hope they dont get visited by the Space Kraken. Needs more struts.

  • 5:30 "this isn't your usual slow reaction" i mean it's kinda to the nuke what a conventional rocket is to a bomb, right? like a nuclear runaway explosion that just keeps going with one end open

  • NASA are fully aware Musk can fund moon missions with his own money. The hurried, leaked award is simply an attempt to keep themselves relevant by ensuring Space X does not land on the moon before them.

  • I'm curious as to how low the centre of mass is on the SpaceX design. At first glance, you'd be hoping for a very level landing area. Just remembering the angle 'Falcon' took when it came to rest during Apollo 15.

  • *Me before watching Scott's video* Starship!? That's ridiculous! It will never work! *Me after watching Scott's video* Holy cow! It could actually work!

  • "NASA has invested over $3 billion in SpaceX to develop its Crew Dragon capsule as part of its Commercial Crew Program, which began in 2010 and promised to develop a new generation of “American Rockets” and “American Spacecraft,” launched from “American soil.”" So it surpraises me not at all that they continue with the same partners. Hope as many as possible of the other contractors also get some parts of this or some other project! There's lot's of pie to share, when all of earth reaches to the far heavens!

  • Im very sad they dropped the dynetics lander. I really like SpaceX but the Dynetics lander seemed like the better choice.

    • @Robert Connor SpaceX will find solutions. However it is still a massively oversized ship that is a pita to get in or out of. There will be many challenges with it. The entire starship design is based on it going to mars and there have been some major compromises just to make that possible.

    • It seems like Dynetics could much better handle an uneven surface, which there is a lot of on the moon. How is Starship going to land, it likely will tip over.

  • 11:21 "New Raptor who dis?" lol

  • Having played Kerbaal Space Program all I can say is the SpaceX Long standyupship is going to be a bitch to land without losing a leg.

  • The real reason NASA is paying SpaceX for a lunar lander is because NASA has decayed to the point where they have no one left with the expertise to build a lunar lander. I worked as a contractor for NASA in the late 1990s, and even then there were many equipment from the Apollo program that no one at NASA knew its function much less how to build one.

  • i dort get why the moon lander of space x has no wings scott said that it makes sense that it doesn't have any, it would make more sense if it had them because if that starship has to enter the atmosphere of earth without the wings it will burn up, or am i seing this totally wong .

    • @ichglotzTV i see so its supposed to be a mun surface to station vehicle

    • It's not supposed to land on Earth.

  • I imagine the purple faces of the tiny anti-Musk crowd due to this news, and this fills me with joy. 😈

  • So, Taxpayers fix another of Musks projects?

  • Congrats to spacex starship for winning! Listening to Scott talk about everything spacex will have to do to make starship viable for the moon landing is so cool because thats exactly what they are testing right now. Amazing!

  • @11:21 “new raptor. Who dis?”

  • That explains why Bridenstines been getting real chummy with me lately

  • Scott for intergalactic lordship. Scotty for palpatime.

  • I think the Spacex lander for cargo and one of the other two landers for crew would work. The national lander does have one advantage you have a fresh engine for ascent if you damage the descent engine during landing which happened a few times with Apollo. Though the Dynetics lander probably could get back into lunar orbit so long as half it's engines on each side are working. I think the Spacex lander might need at least one good Raptor to get back into lunar orbit as I'm not sure if the ring of landing thusters would be high enough ISP with the cosine losses maybe if they could ditch the lower half of the vehicle. I wonder if they based the thrusters off the Kestrel on Falcon 1?

  • I wonder if this pivot in thinking will influence future Chinese luna mission design.

  • I would love to see orion dock with the starship. The difference in size would be amazing to see🤣

  • What a farce. Big money grab with no promise kept.

  • Taking a starship to the moon compared to the others is like sipping cocktails on the deck of a cruise ship or sipping recycled urine on a dingy.

  • the most exciting thing about going to the moon again is that we now have the tech to capture and transmit video in more than 100 pixels. If spaceX taught us anything, it's that you can re-captivate the public's opinion on space by just showing them real footage. Science instrumentation is nice to have and creates great scientific manuscripts, but motion pictures is all the public cares about in the end.

  • My name is Scott lawrelllyyyy

  • I think the thing with the SpaceX proposal is that at this point in history it still looks crazy to give it to them because of how different it is from the other proposals which are more like iterations on tried and tested landing systems, albeit very large iterations. So it feels like this huge leap into the unknown and a huge risk. And yes it is. But if SpaceX can prove out starship as a launch system to earth orbit most of these feelings will go away I think. That’s kind of the thing, it seems impossible until it’s done and then suddenly omg it’s probably actually the best option. Not saying that it will work cause it IS a huge step and there are so many R&D steps to work on.

  • Wait until someone realizes the astronauts can just fly starship the entire way. Or take dragon up to the refueled starship, then off to moon...

  • I wonder what's the typical breakdown of the cost. Why does a company need $3 billion to design a rocket? Is it for building prototypes? Is it because they have to hire rare talent, e.g. custom chip designers that work in space? Where does most of the money go?
