It's like a spaceship for sharks.

"Life support system" were the three key words that convinced me to do a video about an aquarium. Because yes: behind the scenes at The Deep, an aquarium in Hull, there's a life support system, and it deserves that name.
Thanks to all the team at The Deep! More about them: or on their channel:

  • I guess technically it's more of a "space station for sharks", or "space station for all sorts of marine life", but that doesn't sound quite as catchy.

  • Soooo its a filter

  • When I saw the thumbnail I thought you went to Fehmarn.

  • Nice how Ben affleck was explaining to us about the life support system

  • Did not expect to see The Deep on your channel... Hull finally made it eh!

  • Content

  • Is it just me or Tom Scott looks a lot like Watson from SHERLOCK (Martin Freeman)

  • Wow I’ve been there! Took ages to wait outside and it was raining, but it was a wonderful experience

  • And this device here controls how wet the water is. Sharks need very wet water to survive, and as the water sits in a tank inert, it get less and less wet. This machine restores it to the original, natural wetness through means of splishing and splashing. For every splish there must be a splash, so this part here counts them and applies a splish or a splash from the respective reservoirs to restore the balance.

  • Visited a couple of times, Well worth a trip

  • I went there so many times cos everywhere else nearby kinda sucks

  • Tom getting distracted by a stingray is really funny to me for some reason

  • When you even mention the emperor's new virus, I don't wanna watch your video anymore. I thought you were a REAL science guy.

  • "I got an email"

  • "Somewhere like this, The Deep in the city of Hull, is somewhere I'd never have visited because, well, it's in Hull." *runs away in Southern*

  • 1:10 Why would you waste good spring water (tap) by putting salt in it. There's a big ol' ocean right there.

  • If you play at 1.75 times you wont hear the echos

  • Half the fun for me as a fish keeper is all the technology and gear like this. Glad you dipped your toe in!

  • Silent Running coming up !

  • "We are responsible for every single life at The Deep." *proceeds to exterminate microbes via UV rays*

  • All this money spent when the ocean does everything the fish need for free. Almost like they shouldnt be there 🤔

  • This video makes me thirsty

  • Wow, a lot more goes into this than I thought!

  • Been to the Deep many times when I lived in Hull, never thought about it quite like this, thank you very much for this video

  • This is the most interesting Tom Scott video for an aquaculturist and diver like me.

  • Very cool!

  • So demin water as used in the Harrier.

  • Am I the only one thinking of hospitals instead of spaceships when hearing 'life support' mentioned?

  • What did we do to deserve your videos for 14 years, I remember the toaster one from forever ago and here you are now still slaying

  • "School for Gifted Axolotls"

  • Fascinating! I realized there were quite a few processes to keep an aquarium up and running, but I didn't know the specific details regarding those processes. Very neat 👍

  • I wonder how applicable some of these processes are for water management in space.

  • Hello Tom! Can you do a video on how everyday appliances work? Like a lightbulb, toaster, microwave, air fryer, and whatever else you can think of, that would be cool, I love your vids btw.

  • nice grain

  • I really wish I knew what on earth they mean by school for gifted axolotls. I mean what are those axolotls up to? what do you have to do as an axolotl to prove that you are gifted? Where are the non-gifted axolotls. This may be my Attention Deficit but I have not been able to take in any other information from this video since seeing that sign.

  • As interesting as this is, I am wildly disappointed to not see sharks in a spaceship

  • You do a smiliar thing but in a small scale for any saltwater aquarium at home.

  • Amogus

  • Ok tom

  • Puts the home fish bowl to shame.

  • 0:37 I knew you would show star trek!

  • Drink every time you hear the phrase "Life support system"

  • I been to hull

  • Looks like the video is too much summarized. It would have been nice to see a little more of the "uninteresting" details. Thanks, Tom

  • I am going down all the channels I subscribe to and asking them if they can set up a channel on Rumble ... that way I can get rid of the SEnewss app but still see all the best creators who I have grown to love. Thanks in advance.

  • Sawfish in there nice

  • I think aquariums may be missing the boat... I bet a LOT more people would be eager to visit a "Spaceship for Sharks!" :)

  • 3:26 It's just that. An "exhibit". These are animals that should be where they belong in the seas and oceans and not held in captivity and ogled at by humans

  • I thought this was clickbait but then I realised how interesting and cool this really is. It's like that giant greenhouse experiment in the desert somewhere, but for fish.

  • That's cool but I'm still going to have nightmares about spaceships full of sharks... Meh, worth it.

  • .

  • Why would I be more interested in the behind the scenes machinery and logistics of attractions like this?

  • one small step for fish...

  • I reckon that this was definitely one of the AI generated video titles.

  • Hello I am a Hullian

  • mm fishy

  • How did you find the older, less Australian version of Derek Muller from Veritasium?

  • The aquarium could double as an aquaponic farm haha

  • “Biology and zoology never really interested me.” That’s why we have resident ornithologist Chris Joel.

  • Cool!

  • Me as a German reading the description: "'Lebenerhaltungssystem' is one word. 🤔"

  • One of the places where you'll be able to see fish that haven't yet ingested microplastics

  • You should make a video about right to repair and Louis Rossmann's campaign to get it passed in Massachusetts and hopefully hopefully other places that follow.

  • Awesome video of an amazing place!

  • The best thing about this is that even if the ocean next to the aquarium is contaminated, the aquarium really isnt affected at all

  • Tom scott, His majesty is dead.

  • How old are you?

  • You had me at sharkies!!!

  • The exhibit: hmm fish The Life Support system: hmm advanced water

  • Just when you thought it was safe to leave the atmosphere... Jaws XXVII: Jaws... IN SPACE!!!!!

  • 1:20 i see some COPVS (Composite-overwrapped-pressure-vessel) thats nice

  • I wonder if instead of being converted to N2 gas the nitrates could be reused elsewhere as fertiliser.

  • Why couldn't they just filter the sea water? Edit: Ahh it's by a river. That's why!

    • And it's incredibly muddy. It would have to be left to settle for ages before it could be used.

  • Hey I go to that aquarium, this is so bizarre to watch

  • This is very similar to the wastewater treatment systems used in treating municipal wastewater, but with the added complexity of working with salt water.

  • I never thought you weren't interested in biology.

  • Hey Tom, can you make a video on the navigation satellite system "Galileo". A system developed by ESA to compete with the GPS from US? As far as I know it is supposed to be way more precise and also more accessible for private people / businesses. Sounds like a cool thing and brings the European countries closer together since it has people working from all across the EU and companies from all the countries contributing to its development. I really like it's idea and I am even considering just doing my master to work for ESA and hopefully be able to contribute to this project in the future or a new one. I just really really like the idea of people from different nationalities coming together to create something to make everyone's lives better, even when those countries were at war not even 100 years ago. Thanks :)

  • Imagine end of the world those fish be dead any way. They need to be put back in the ocean imagine if corona virus was real and wiped every one out?.

  • This might sound stupid but for long term space travel wouldn't this might actually work? For actual spaceships? For sharks at least

  • Tom, you haven’t been aging well. I just watched a video of you from 6 years ago but you looked 15 years younger than you are now.

  • I only understood about half of what they were doing, but I appreciate the ingenuity!

  • It's just some fish

  • Everything now will sound like an AI generated idea, no matter whether or not it actually is.

  • I just realized that you were in that one show called connect and THAT PONYTAIL THO

  • Damn, top notch video!! I always enjoy your videos, short and full of information. Just to the point! Though I would have loved an explanation on why the microbes where exposed to UV-light. My 'slightly educated' guess is, that this is how they dispose of them. EDIT: By 'slightly educated' I mean the fact that UV-light is non-preferrable to most organisms on our planet (the atmosphere of the earth absorbs most of the shorter wavelengths - one of the keywords here is 'ozone'), which is why we humans have a chance of getting skin cancer by being exposed to the sun for too long. In short: UV-light alters our DNA, which can lead to cancer when our immune system can't dispose of those altered cells.

  • This was an awesome video and a great thing to get some insight about. Thanks

  • When will we run out of music melodies?

  • Ben Jones looks like Ben Affleck, if Ben Affleck just really liked fishies

  • that is an awesome building inside and out.

  • I dare to change your chanel name to tommmyinnnit scott

  • maybe make sth about videos that crash discord?

  • Can't wait to visit The Deep once it reopens

  • It’s like a spaceship for sharks.

  • This is extremely cool and i want to work there, even if it's just cleaning haha

  • I wasn’t expecting this to be as interesting as it was, wow!

  • This building is hideous.

  • Video about Esperanto?

  • For a second I thought Ben Jones was Ben Affleck
