  • Why dont you extend your oil drain interval if the used oil analysis indicates that everything is still fine with the oil and engine? Especially the used oil data is perfectly suited to tell you your personal oil drain interval.

  • I had notchy gear change issues on my old E39. I mitigated the problem almost fully by putting Red Line MT-90. After that point I pretty much did not have problems with gear shifts up until we parted ways with the car (for at least 40-50k kilometers).

  • hey i lived in margronnigen(stuttgart) in 2012 for about 4 months '. when i split i maxed out my mx5 1.8. id just done the waterpump and the cam timing . i hit max revs in 5th so bout 127mph . not the quickest i been but at least i was legal. i had a 944turbo s in england i used to take her to 152mph but it was way too risky (my license!) so i never maxed her out. id like to hit the autobahn again and the nurburgring to go for a boot one day. right now i gotta merc w210 e300td om606 that i wanna mod for big horse power . funds permitting . anyway man there you go.

  • Comments: 1. The underside of your engine and gearbox are very clean. Do you clean often? My e39 540 6 speed is much dirtier . I ‘wipe’ clean once a year but I’m notaclean freak. 2. I use redline trans oil (and diff oil ) which makes shifting beautiful - all gears all weather (Vancouver climate, rare freeze)

  • You're definitely going to ignore this advice, but I'll say it anyway as it may help someone else. The MoSO2 additive that you added in there is going to gradually wear out the synchros in the transmission. Synchros actually require a bit of friction to work correctly, that's why the transmission fluid is on only rated as GL-4 and not GL-5. As GL-5 is too slippery for the synchros in manual transmissions, GL-5 is usually used for diffs. So MoSO2 (Molybdenum Disulphide) additive that you put in, works as friction reducer, so it'll make it harder for the synchros to grab, gradually the synchros will wear out and the box will start to crunch. I takes a while to happen, I destroyed my E92 transmission in the same way using LiquiMoly MoSO2 additive mixed with MTF LT-3 factory fluid. Initially it felt AMAZING, then gradually got worse over the course of 2-3 years or so.

    • @Peter Y Thank you for the information, I agree with you that the LM Additive can destroy the syncro rings, a little friction is needed for them to work optimally! its like why destroy oil properties with MoSO2 additives, Dimple magnetic drain plug look pretty awesome!

    • @mybmw2008 no problems at all, I am just sharing my experience. I also thought the LM additive was the bee’s knees, but it turned out to be quite problematic (for me). Throughout all the BMW cars I’ve owned, I always used BMW genuine fluid and never had issues (compatible aftermarket fluids are fine too). The moment I added an additive, I had troubles 😂 Also, worth mentioning I live in a moderately warm climate, I am in Australia. So I’ve never experienced shifting issues in cold weather, so your mile may vary using genuine LTF-2. I’ve used LTF-2 in my E46 and E92 335i, LTF-3 in my E92 M3 and F10 M5, and now using LTF-5 in my manual F82 M4. Never had a single issue with any of them using genuine fluid. I also use a Dimple magnetic drain plug for engine and transmission for added peace of mind: drainplugmagnets.com/motorcycles/bmw/

    • @M539 Restorations Hi Sreten, thanks a lot for your videos, I have pretty much the same hobbies as you and I work on BMW's in my garage as a hobby in my free time, I've been doing this for 12 years now and have owned multiple toy BMW's over the years, (I am not a mechanic, I am Software Engineer by profession). I thoroughly enjoy watching your content mate, keep up the good work. The BMW transmission that I had ruined by adding Moly additive to it, is a ZF GS6-53BZ off a F10 M5. It's widely known as the strongest transmission ever fitted to a BMW. You'll find heaps of people online with 1000whp Supra's making custom adapter plates and fitting this transmission to their heavily modified Japanese turbo engines (2JZ, RB26... etc.). In August 2015, I replaced the fluid with genuine BMW LT-3 fluid, and decided to add LM additive. I had zero problems with the transmission beforehand, but I just wanted extra protection, that's all. Initially, the transmission shifted fantastic, then gradually over the course of 8-10 months, I started to hear very low faint crunching sounds on gear shifts. It still shifted fine, but started to make some slight crunches, it felt as though the synchros aren't doing their job correctly to match the rotational speed of the next gear you're shifting into, so it's crunching on gear egagement. The crunching sound kept getting louder with time, then around May 2016, I did a ton of researh on the issue, and I found out that the synchros inside manual transmissions don't like super slippery fluid. The gears inside the box will benefit from the Moly (just like an open diff), but the synchros will suffer. This is also why all manual transmission fluid is only rated as GL-4 (low lubricity) and not GL-5 (high lubricity). If you put diff fluid (GL-5) into a manual transmission, it'll gradually wear out the synchros too (just like the LM additive). To cut a long story short, I eventually dropped the transmission, and opened it, the back of the synchros that grabs on the next gear to spin up and match the speed, was worn down. Completely unbeleivable for 66,000km on the transmisson. It's evidence that there wasn't enough friction between the synchro and the gear cog. I have never heard or seen a failed a GS6-53BZ transmission, they're invincible those things. And BMW don’t sell the synchros separately, so needed a complete transmission replacement 🤦🏻‍♂️ Everything inside the transmission was covered in that slimey grey layer of moly additive. It's super super super slippery. A ton of further research I discovered that there are people from many other brands that have had similar experience to mine with adding moly directly to the transmission oil. But some haven’t had issues. If you can ask ZF or Getrag themselves, then you'll probably get a better answer than if you ask LiquiMoly. LiquiMoly wants to sell products at the end of the day, like any other company. The LiquiMoly additive may work well on many other transmissions, however, my ZF GS6-53BZ didn't like it, and I am sure other BMW ZF transmissions won't either (can't speak of Getrag transmissions found in other BMW and Mini Cooper cars).     • @mybmw2008 there are no "big mistakes" in the video. I know people who put ATF in this transmission and have put over 50.000 km without issues. LT 3 and gear additive will not harm or destroy your gearbox. I've used original BMW LT 2 fluid in this transmission and it's horrible after a couple of hundred kilometers, you struggle to shift. Same story with Castrol 75W.

    • I find it very hard to believe the additive destroyed your gearbox. LM gearbox additive was developed for gearboxes as the name suggests. It shouldn't be used in LSD diffs, that's correct cause of the clutch plates, in open diff it's safe to be used as well as the manual transmission. I've had this combo in my E46 for 10.000 km and 8-9 months now and there are no side-effects or issues. Since you commented on this, I'll ask Liqui Moly technical support directly about this and report back.

  • Try the fumoto valve to replace the coolant drain plugs on the block. I would just to the right / passenger side block plug, as the drivers side only as a little coolant usually. The part number is F106N. The plug is rated at high temps and a lot of folks use them on their diesel trucks blocks for the same reason.... also tranny fluid redline d4. Thanks for pointing out 2nd gear notch... I thought I was the only one.

  • I use a molybdene based additive when I feel my gearbox is a little bit stiff when the engine is cold, especially in winter. I suppose you did the same on your BMW.

  • My friend why would you drive or try to drive on a cold start. Just warm it up and the crunchy snack will go away.. 🚶

    • Wrong, you should immediately drive normally, you shouldn't sit and wait for it warm up. Cause there's a gasket ring on the plug.

  • I custom ordered a 2000 MY US spec M5 and owned it for about two years and put some 17,000 miles on it. Tracked it a few times but the rotors warped at 1,800 miles...the dealer replaced them under warranty...I forgot to tell them about the track days...at 4,000 lbs the car is heavy though, hence the blue rotors. Also, the US cars had a dual-mass flywheel that would heat up and feel like a slipping clutch...very annoying. Sold the car and replaced with a 2004 M3. Much happier.

  • You could try RVS transmission treatment in that gearbox. Not sure if they sell it in germany though, you might have to import it from Finland directly. Or just ask the company for a sample, they've sent out samples for SEnewssrs before. I recall LegitStreetCars tried it in a clapped out Cadillac Escalade and the automatic transmission started shifting just fine after 80km.

  • Let me share my very painful experience with BMW. I Bought a 2012, 528i M package with only 41k, from a dealer. (that time car was less than 4 years old), beautiful car, excellent driving experience until in about 2 WEEKS (yes saw it correctly 2 weeks only) when the car started smoking like crazy every morning and when the engine was cold, found out these cars have issue with Turbo charge and BMW offered extended warranty due to commonality of the issue. It was fixed in BMW of Monrovia in south CA. the car run for less than 6 months before the check engine light came on and dealer charged me $190.00 to diagnose the issue and told me it would cost me $850 to fix an issue with thermostat. and they did, few month later, it was another check engine light but this time a independent mechanic helped me and changed the engine belt. The battery was the next to get changed, Then the driver side Harness Safety Belt Seat Belt Clip got messed up and I had to buy a used one form eBay and changed it myself to save some money and time (these time BMW dealers are charging $210.00 /h labor (more than what most of the physician get paid). In less than 3 years and when the car had only 60k all the interior bottoms started chipping paints and the seat (in particular driving seat) started fainting and cracking), I bought interior paint and fix the seats but the bottoms kept chipping, and while in 72 k, car had drive train issue and needed either new engine (12k) or thanks god, I found a mechanic who helped me change the Timing chain, and tensioner (which BMW is under a huge lawsuit for being such an unreliable cars) for about 4k. and happily sold the car. If these are not reliability issues what will be!! PLEASE stop selling this stupid car until the company takes responsibility.
