Starship | SN10 | High-Altitude Flight Test

On Wednesday, March 3, Starship serial number (SN10) successfully completed SpaceX’s third high-altitude flight test of a Starship prototype from our site in Cameron County, Texas.
Similar to the high-altitude flight tests of Starship SN8 and SN9, SN10 was powered through ascent by three Raptor engines, each shutting down in sequence prior to the vehicle reaching apogee - approximately 10 km in altitude. SN10 performed a propellant transition to the internal header tanks, which hold landing propellant, before reorienting itself for reentry and a controlled aerodynamic descent.

The Starship prototype descended under active aerodynamic control, accomplished by independent movement of two forward and two aft flaps on the vehicle. All four flaps were actuated by an onboard flight computer to control Starship’s attitude during flight and enabled a precise landing at the intended location. SN10’s Raptor engines reignited as the vehicle performed the landing flip maneuver immediately before successfully touching down on the landing pad!
As if the flight test was not exciting enough, SN10 experienced a rapid unscheduled disassembly shortly after landing. These test flights are all about improving our understanding and development of a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry both crew and cargo on long-duration interplanetary flights, and help humanity return to the Moon, and travel to Mars and beyond.

  • Man will go mars no earlier than 2040. Even a small cybertruck takes years to be released to public, I can't imagine how long it will take starship to meet all the requirements. Probably decades. The news says we will see Man on mars very soon, just to keep us high expectations, but I think it's just marketing. I'm just being realistic.

    • @Igor Delta F. I'm not sure where you get 1400 days from. During the closest approach, Mars is about a 6-9 month journey depending on which year you launch. That is maximum ~270 days trip one way to Mars. Perhaps you can be more specific on where you are getting your numbers from

    • @Matt's SEnewss stuff Yes they are unrelated. But my point was not to relate them, instead I used cybertruck merely to give an example. The degree of complexity of starship is just far beyond from what we have achieved in terms of technology right now. The longest time a human was continuously in space is 437 days, and the record is 665 cumulative days. A crewed mission would require 1410 days trip plus several days of orbital alignment, docking , collecting data, weather conditions IF everything goes 100% perfect. We are not talking about a single individual +1500 days but a CREW of maybe 4 to 8 people! Unfortunately there are several other factors that we need at least a decade to develop. Don't take me wrong, I want to see so hard humans going mars, but not as a suicidal mission. On my perspective no earlier than 2040 for a crewed mission. But for a cargo ship maybe in this decade. Fingers crossed 🙏

    • You can't compare the two, at all. For a long time, there just wasn't a facility available to build Cybertruck. The major hurdle or requirement to go to Mars is having a safe and reliable system, and launching at the correct window which opens every two years. In 2022, SpaceX will (fingers crossed) be able to send unmanned cargo vehicles to Mars, which if successful will pave the way to send humans in either 2024 or 2026. If they are unsuccessful in 2022, it will push the timeline back another 2 years. The one thing I agree with you on is yes this is marketing. They want people to be excited about this and they want to make it their goal to send people to Mars regularly. TLDR; The point is the comparison you make to the Cybertruck is completely unrelated to the development of Starship.

    • @69 the idea of a cybertruck started in 2012. The first prototype was in 2018. The first cybertruck to public will be in the end of 2021. Starship is so far to meet the requirements, without mentioning the human limitations in other fields to make this reality. 2040 is a optimistic year, and I hope I am wrong because I want to be alive when man go there.

  • What I don’t like about the BFR is that there is no redundancy. Since fuel tanks are located in the nose cone, the crew cannot jettison from the top to escape an inevitable failure. Any manned flights must have redundancy.

I don’t ever see the risk factor going away. Man it too flawed. Too much can go wrong in manned space flight. Too many extremes. I don’t know if it is ethical watching people kill themselves trying to go to Mars.... like the Mars one project?

  • When landing, the ignition is too late to correct. It needs to be 1-2 seconds earlier.The liquid fuel bunker should be divided into many small bunkers. Otherwise, if the whole bunker is turned vertically to horizontal, and then to vertical, the kinetic energy of the liquid itself can heat itself, causing expansion and deflagration

    • @Epic gamer Heap1 Starship DOES use helium. After SN8s crash helium was put into the header tank of SN9 and SN10 to keep the tank pressurized and to prevent what happened to SN8. The helium was not supposed to be ingested.

  • Need to add a parachute placed on top of the missile, when it falls straight. Need to improve the landing cooling system with the missile fixation axle after landing, I mean upgrading the yard system so that under it there is a shaft that can move and attach itself. as a landing gear. Maybe so, try using a flying parachute that cuts off when the Rocket is falling in mid-air. hm ... i think this idea can be sold, maybe n't 😄

    • @Huỳnh Đức Lê Yes, but they've already demonstrated they can land it without, and a parachute would also increase turnaround time for reuse. No need for one if propulsive landing can already yield the requested results.

    • @alexn310 I know it's heavy, I mean the parachute is only used for a short time and then cut off when the missile is horizontal, except that the missile is placed at the top of the missile retained at the upright position. The parachute flew horizontally should be two moderate instead of one large enough to bear the load since it would be cut off to enter the final stage anyway. Although mainly used to reduce the force and help more stability, the possibility of wind, the weather will adversely affect the parachute and affect the missile but this problem can be improved. which is that you can use three parachutes to change your posture from horizontal to straight if you cut the parachute from the tail of the Rocket.

  • I think that the engineers made a mistake in constructing the "SN" rocket in that they practically limited the cooling of the "Raptor" engine. When the descent starts and the engines start, they start or do not work. Then air pressure is created which returns the heat to the "pot", so to speak. With Falcon rockets, the engines are free and they don't have that problem. One of the solutions is to drill holes in the lower part, next to the legs, or to line the engines with refractory material.

Why it exists, what is that for? to carry mental state from dead body ? living after death in different dimention? We can't see any real connection of paired subparticules on distance, but maybe this is the effect of some processes from highe dimension. As scientist can't detect any even smallest fluctuation of anything during the process ,when changing state of 1st particular automatically change state of the other in time of ZERO at whatever distance. If I remember the latest test was performed at the distance of around 60kms or more. Although near death experience (NDE) happens only in our heads.... we cannot just say for 100% that it's due to processes in brain (very likely) but if we hear that those people could be in all places they want at the same time, that they even could tell what their family members (away) were doing while they were "out" of their bodies as they claim. Of course assuming that at least a few stories were real not just faked for any reason...as people can do a lot for money. ....selling stories etc. The most interesting is the case of neurosurgeon (not religiious one). What the nature uses that feature for. This is the most interesting thing for me in whole science...

    • @Don You are right, of course, we don't know the technological advancements that will occur well into the future. The sort of technology that helps engineer an SSTO vehicle will likely be used to travel to new stars.

Imagine getting energy from splitting atom ( a lot in atmosphere) on fly and later in space getting it from photons or other stuff, included magainzed energy from new kind of battery. Too early to even imagine how it may be in next 1000years. I bet the aim is not to carry too much fuel with the ship and that might be possible as you can get energy from anything.. what matters is to create proper devices which can do that. Also imagine that something might be hidden.. explain how works quantum entalngement... maybe we will be able to send small portions of energy if a source is millions kms away. If we can affect a state of an sub-atom particular on distance, that means a change. a change means that something happens if something happens you can get energy from that...as there is no action without energy. to change something = energy rises... so why not to connect millions of the particles to set entanglement on on those packets and do something with that on distance ;) In space you only needs energy to change velocity and direction of you vehicle... landing or starting from planets different storry as you have a lot of particules in atmospheres you can use to get that energy

We did not have real reusable rockets in the 40s quit making up shit.

    • @Neil Mcmac falcon 9 landed at its 5th try and now it's the most reliable rocket. Starship had 4, and next prototype is full of new technologies successfully proven. Please, don't compare a mission to a test. The expectations are different, Saturn V was pioneering, Starship is so too. And Sn10 landed. SN11 tested advanced solutions, they learn from them and they will do the same, fly fail fix

I'm just curious as to how you gave SN11 a 2/10, you couldn't see a damn thing! lol I would argue that SN11 is an unfortunate 0/10 because of the fog, but from an engineering perspective a 10/10 because it helped them identify an issue that they need to fix for future missions.
